Prof. M
C Deo joined VJTI as its Director on June 12, 2011
retaining lien at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)
Bombay where he served in the faculty of Civil Engineering
since 1983. He obtained his Ph D in 1983 and thereafter
joined the faculty at IIT Bombay engaging himself in
teaching, research, consultancy and administration. During
1986 and 1989 he had two brief stints as post-doc at
University of Liverpool U K.
His
main interest is ocean engineering in general and
applications of statistical, stochastic, artificial
intelligence and other computing techniques to analyze
met-ocean data in particular. He has guided 11 Ph D and 50
Masters Students so far and has published around than 130
papers in Journals and conference proceedings. Currently
four Ph D and two M Tech students work with him at IIT
Bombay. He has obtained considerable external funding from
ONGC, ISRO, NRB, NIOT, DST, DOD to carry out his research
activities.
Prof.
Deo contributed to the growth of hydraulic engineering of
India at the national level by acting as President of
Indian Society for Hydraulics for four years. He helped in
knowledge dissemination in ocean and hydrological
engineering by organizing over 17 conferences, workshops,
short term courses and seminars. He set up a new lab at
IIT Bombay called Artificial Intelligence Lab by inviting
funds from DST.
He has
given the benefit of his knowledge to organizations such as
Konkan Railways, ONGC, National Water Academy, and Indian
National Committee for Hydraulics, by serving in capacities
such as non-official Director / advisory board member. He
also has been on advisory boards, review committees, and
selection committees of a large number of other national
level organizations. Prof. Deo has offered professional
help on commercial basis to companies like ONGC, NPCL, NTPC,
MMRDA, TCE, and HCC.
Prof.
Deo has led research efforts nationally and internationally
by acting as (a) Editor of ‘International Journal of Ocean
and Climate Systems’, Multi-Science Publishing Co., U. K.,
(b) Associate Editor of ASCE Journal of Computing in Civil
Engg., (c) Chair, Editorial Board of ISH Journal of
Hydraulic Engineering, (d) Member, Editorial Boards of
International Journal of Ships and Offshore Structures,
Open Ocean Engineering Journal, Journal of Advances in
Civil Engineering, past Civil-Comp conferences, U. K
Prof.
Deo has received Prof. H H Mathur award, outstanding
Associate Editor Award of ASCE, IRCC research award of IIT
Bombay and ISH Jalavigyan Puraskar for his distinguished
works.
